Assessments and Testing Can Save Us From Being Duped By Judge Patrick Bowler (Ret.)
Judge Patrick Bowler (Ret.)
The founders of drug treatment courts wisely incorporated known and scientifically established elements of behavioral science into the structure of treatment courts.
This was not by accident. Many of the failures in attempts to redeem individuals involved in the criminal justice system rely on practices counter to behavioral science and behavior modification.
Averhealth team members were delighted to interact – safely – with members of the American Probation and Parole Association (APPA) at the organization’s recent Winter Institute in Atlanta. Thanks to those who stopped by our booth in the exhibit hall! We are a proud Corporate Member of APPA and a Gamma sponsor of the conference.
Sessions and workshops featured the latest topics and trends affecting probation and parole professionals. One plenary session delved into the stresses that probation staff face – and how their leaders and peers can help them overcome mental-health challenges given the many stresses they face.

Drug overdoses killing more than 100,000 a year
New data shows that drug overdoses are killing more than 100,000 people a year in the United States. That’s more than vehicle crashes and gun deaths combined. While the Covid pandemic has affected this trend, two factors are at play: a surge in supply of opioids and insufficient access to treatment and other programs that can mitigate the damage.
Earlier research has suggested that simultaneous alcohol and cannabis use increases driving impairment, leading to a higher risk of traffic fatality more than either substance individually, particularly among young adolescents.
Yet, until now, according to the school, no nationally representative study has tested simultaneous use and people reporting driving under the influence of these substances.
