Industry News
Fentanyl Awareness Day
May 10th was the first Fentanyl Awareness Day to raise awareness of the lab-made opioid with deadly consequences. This website provides helpful information about the risks of fentanyl and what you can do to prevent, recognize, and reverse an overdose.
Here’s a scary stat from the website: an estimated 250-500 million pills made with fentanyl are in circulation in the U.S. at any time. Averhealth will explore fentanyl during an upcoming webinar. Look for details soon.
DEA Warnings on Fentanyl
The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) warns that fentanyl is about 50 times more potent than heroin and 100 times more powerful than morphine. An agency news release notes that fentanyl is “inexpensive, widely available, and highly addictive. Many people who are overdosing and dying don’t even know that they are taking fentanyl.”
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that in the United States, nearly 107,000 people died as the result of a drug overdose in the 12 months ending November 2021, according to the news release. Sixty-six percent of overdose deaths involved synthetic opioids such as fentanyl. DEA has created a special exhibit for its museum, The Faces of Fentanyl, to commemorate the lives lost from fentanyl poisoning. The agency invites the public to submit a photo of a loved one lost to fentanyl by emailing the name and image to fentanylawareness@dea.gov.
